The barn owl, also known as the white owl, is found in Switzerland in numbers ranging from 200 to 1,000 pairs. Thanks to a camera, they can be observed at the Sauge Nature Center, Birdlife. The species is highly dependent on the presence of voles. By consuming up to 6,000 rodents per year, it effectively complements the work of diurnal predators! We are fortunate to have one of the leading experts on this bird in Switzerland: Professor Alexandre Roulin of the University of Lausanne. Even quite late in our history, people warded off bad luck by nailing it to barn doors.

Reminder: The season marks the return of protective nets for vineyards. While many winemakers now opt for side nets that no longer harm birds and hedgehogs, others unfortunately continue to use full-coverage nets, often poorly installed or unmonitored: the result is needless casualties, animals in agony, and wine with a very bitter taste!
